Sustainable livelihoods

We support economic empowerment of PWDs to enable them lead a self-reliant and independent life in their communities. This is done through equipping PWDs with Skills that promote their employability both in the formal and informal sectors.

(i) Waged Employment Project

This was a 2-year project that targeted 100 Youth with disabilities and aimed at increasing access to waged employment for skilled persons with disabilities in Kampala in a sustainable and holistic way, addressing: the capacity gaps of three DPOs, the employability skills gaps of 100 candidates, the lack of an existing accessible online database bringing candidates together with employers and the stigma and lack of knowledge among 20-30 employers.

(ii) Adjumani Women Empowerment Project (2018-2021)

The three-year project    aimed at empowering young women with disabilities through vocational skills development and support for start-up kits to enable them establish their own livelihoods enterprises.  The project was funded by Leonard Cheshire International and supported a total of 250 women with disabilities.

(iii) Increasing life chances and incomes for people with disabilities in Moyo district (2015-2019)

The project aims to empower people with disabilities with employable vocational and business skills to enable them enter employment in both the formal and informal sectors. The project, targeted 800 people with disabilities across Moyo district.  The project was a partnership between Cheshire Services Uganda and Leonard Cheshire Disability with a funding from Comic Relief.

(vi) Skills Development Project for Adjumani refugee and host community youths (2018-2019)

The 1-year project funded by European Trust Fund through the Belgian Development Agency  –  ENABEL  supported  200  youths  with  and  without  disabilities  drawn  from refugee and host communities of Adjumani district.  The project focus was on vocational skills development together with access to start-up kits.

(v) Sustainable livelihoods for people with disabilities in Northern Uganda (2015-2018)

Funded by the European Union, the project aimed at equipping young people with disabilities in Adjumani and Moyo district with employable skills including vocational and business skills. The project supported 900 people with disabilities across the two districts in a period of three years.  The project was a partnership between Cheshire Services Uganda and Leonard Cheshire.

(vi) Budaka- Buikwe Livelihoods project (2011-2014)

With  support  from  Leonard  Cheshire  Disability  and  the  European  Union  CSU implemented a three-year livelihood project benefiting 1000 people with disabilities in the two districts of Budaka and Buikwe. The project supported vocational and business skills training for 1000 PWDs and prepared them to transition into employment by providing start up kits.

We integrate a number of programme components and approaches to include; Gender Mainstreaming, Safeguarding, Gender and Social Inclusion, Health and Rehabilitation, Climate Change and Environmental Conservation.
